‘Form team to dig into police vehicles scandal’

Eng Masauni gave the directives during a tour of Dar es Salaam Port and Dar es Salaam Police Academy in the city yesterday. He went to the port to make a follow-up on the implementation of President John Magufuli’s directives in November, last year, tasking the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) and Police Force to clear uncertainties over 100 ambulances and police vehicles that had overstayed at the facility.

“Irregularities related to some vehicles have raised questions for which answers must be given immediately,” he said, explaining that the probe would be conducted by experts from various institutions, including the National Institute of Transport (NIT). The five vehicles are among the 53 cleared from the Port of Dar es Salaam and delivered to Dar es Salaam Police Academy after Dr Magufuli’s impromptu visit to the port in November, last year.

In another development, Eng Masauni tasked the Permanent Secretary (PS) of the Ministry to form a task force to review the contract for importing the police vehicles in order to ensure proper importation of vehicles for use in the police force.

The move, he said, would curb unnecessary importations, pointing out that the committee would include experts from various institutions, including the suppliers who would go through the contract between the government and Ashok Layland.

The government entered the agreement with the company in 2013 to import 777 vehicles worth 20.606 US dollars. He said the review of the contract would lead to the importation of right and necessary vehicles for use, noting that most imported police vehicles overstayed at the port due to long-time dormancy.

“We need to import the right vehicles for use instead of importing vehicles which are not required at the particular time,” he said.
